A brand new, more open and bright access to Duran i Reynals Hospital

Work is underway for the complete remodeling and extension of the entrance hall of the Duran i Reynals Hospital, where the ICO (Catalan Institute of Oncology) is located. AIA designed this project and the construction management was carried out jointly with fellow architect Àlex Lopez-Grado.

The refurbishment includes the construction of a new glass access façade, creating a new, brighter environment. With this intervention, the spaces, including the first-floor cafeteria, which is also being expanded, become higher quality environments with a coherent relationship with the outside world.

The new lobby, emphasizing the highest quality and dialogue between outdoor and indoor spaces, is conceived as a square where green is the protagonist: the vegetation creates an atmosphere of calm and relaxation in the access to the hospital. In addition, the lobby understood as a place of the relationship between the departments of the center and with those who access it, is designed to help relieve tension in an environment with often complicated moments.
