Danish studio Dorte Mandrup and AIA win 2nd prize in the international competition of the “Joint Research Center” in Seville
The European Commission is promoting the construction of a new international research center on the island of La Cartuja (Seville) worth 25 million euros.
The four-storey project consists of meeting rooms, research areas, a library, classrooms, offices, catering areas, etc. in a total of 11,300m² above ground and 2000m² below ground.
The building is designed from a large canopy with an open and permeable perimeter. Indoor activities take place around sheets of water that penetrate into the space, minimizing the impact of heat. This Andalusian construction concept is balanced with modern elements, such as a wooden structure and ceramic slats.
The multidisciplinary team is completed by Jansana de la Vila from PAAW in landscaping and INES in structures.
