Under the slogan "Del Mirador al Pati", the project carried out by AIA with BB Arquitectos, was the winner of the competition for the new sports facility "S'Aigua Dolça" in Palma de Mallorca.
The building is based on a unitary approach that places the new building on the rubble of the old swimming pools. The result is a simple and compact building with both heavy and light materiality that at the same time refers to the passage of time.
The constructive proposal is characterised by being flexible, but with a rigorous order that allows a changing layout, opaque and permeable at the same time, using materials from the island with character. The aim is to lighten the resulting powerful volume in an already densified place. In addition, the incorporation of greenery and ground cover plants is proposed, which attenuates and improves the appearance of the new building. In addition, flexible spaces are proposed in the equipment as a whole, and a distribution that distributes the activity by specialised floors.
A large inner courtyard around which all the activities are organised is, at the same time, a large skylight that captures natural light and a temperature regulator that uses motorised slats to allow the installation to function as an outdoor swimming pool in summer, with energy savings of more than 70%.
The glazed perimeter of the building provides natural light in almost all the spaces. A combined geothermal and heat recovery system, air conditioners and dehumidifiers with free-cooling make it possible to obtain a high level of comfort while minimising energy costs.
