The project consists of the integral reform, integral, extension and rehabilitation of the municipal swimming pool Can Millars, in Cornellà de Llobregat. The original installation (1989) , that had two sheets of water and changing room facilities, had become obsolete due to the elapsed time and the high level of use of the facility.
The new project increases the surface area to 743 m2 and provides the construction of three swimming pools: one of 25x12.5m, one for babies and another for activities. The surface area of the changing rooms, administration areas and lobby have been increased and completely renovated. The pavilion’s accessibility has been improved and a complete renovation of all the facilities has also been carried out: hydraulic systems, filtering systems, sanitary hot water production, production system with solar panels, ventilation, home automation systems for management and control of the facilities, etc.
The most important transformation takes place when the access to the building is changed and it is placed on the upper floor, at the level of the new square which is accessible from the public space. This way a new relationship is established between the equipment and its surroundings, with a more controlled presence and the appearance of a ground floor building. On entering, we can discover the true dimension of the pool, as well as the visual relationship, through the windows of the west facade, between the access and the view over the old district of Cornellà, like a bridge connecting the urban fabric. The treatment of the facade is also an important aspect of the project. The general volume is lined with undulating polycarbonate pieces that generate a play of textures and that, as if they were large vertical slats, filter the light incidence. This solution formally unifies the entire volume while improving it energetically by increasing the thermal insulation performance, improving the interior light quality and integrating solar panels into the pergola of the south facade.
