The Indoor Sports Court in Igualada, is a project resulting from the first prize in the competition for the extension of the sports complex of Les Comes. With a total of 2.970 m² built, the facility has 275 seats for spectators and a multisport court of 44 x 32 meters and 8 meters of free height, divisible with two curtains, for the practice of basketball, handball, indoor football and volleyball.
The new court is located next to the existing indoor courts and it is in direct contact with them through the creation of a new hall, which becomes the hall of the entire complex. The new entrance brings the pavilions together by solving their accessibility, putting them at the same level, and establishing a visual relationship between the four current courts and the new one. This hall, located at street level, thanks to a a triple height, allows to perceive the track located at the first level as well as the stands, located at a higher level on the track. The light and visual relationship generates an interesting game of superimposed planes and spatial transparencies. These relationships are enhanced thanks to a large polycarbonate facade with high thermal and lighting performance that generates a space with a high-quality natural light. The pavilion is conceived as a large prism within which the functional programme is developed. Large, 40-metre-long metal trusses, formed by a composition of Boyd beams and braces, are practically integrated within the large volume.
The court and the changing rooms located on the first level and the stands on the second one, look like a “piece of furniture” inside the box generated by the pavilion’s volume. The interior of the dressing rooms and the wainscot is formed by colourful composition of ceramic and wood respectively, giving a warm touch to the pavilion, where all the spaces are related to each other and have an exciting visual quality. From the outside, the pavilion is formalised as a link between the great hall, which is understood as a continuation of the facade of the entire complex, and the volume of the new court. A light, transparent foyer with glass and polycarbonate, which is attached to a large prismatic volume clad with polymer concrete slabs, where only a few vertical cuts in the form of windows cut out the light within its massif volume.
